Pollution Within Our Homes

(LittleThingsDoMatter) Today’s kids and many people who stay at home the majority of time are having more health issues than ever before: asthma, cancer, lung disease, etc. I remembered a great article in the October 2006 issue of National Geographic about pollution. It didn’t talk about common pollution but instead what is found in our homes.  You can get a good idea of how unsafe your home might be – even though you may be cleaning constantly - by using these interactive pages about pollution in our homes.

To help understand the impact of using chemical-laden cleaners, I recommend getting the book Green Goes With Everything. The author, Sloan Barnett, talks about her son and what led her to research these issues as well as small steps you can take to improve the health of your home and therefore the health of your family.

P. S. If you are looking for eco-friendly cleaning products, I highly recommend these no more pollution cleaners. They’ve made a huge difference in my family’s health.

Asthma, Allergies. . . Home Chemical Pollution?

(LittleThingsDoMatter) This is a subject close to my heart. I have a “Triple A” kid in my life and sad to say there are so many more like him. He was ‘diagnosed’ with asthma, allergies, and ADHD. Hmmm. It wasn’t related to genes either. That seems to be a common theme lately and with a little research, we found it associated more with not only chemicals in household cleaners used every day, but also those little “floating things” in the air – particulates. It was tough to learn that when I was cleaning my home with that wonderful pine or lemon scent or even washing windows that I was in reality filling my home with more pollution than what is outside! Check out: Indoor Air Pollution Increases Asthma Symptoms.

Used to be my “AAA Kid” couldn’t do much because of his asthma. Now, he can go outside and play like most other kids. A few of the things we’ve done that may be of help to you:

  • wall-to-wall carpeting is gone and replaced by scatter/throw rugs that can be tossed in the washer;
  • open windows daily for at least 5 minutes (I’d leave them open constantly if I could as I love to listen to the birds and our wind chimes, but sometimes it’s too hot/cold depending on the season);
  • switched our chemical-laden household cleaners to natural, safe and biodegradable;
  • we live on a property with a lot of trees which help clean the air, but in addition to that, we’ve got quite a few green plants throughout our home;
  • invested in a high quality air purifier;
  • we are fortunate enough to live in an area where I don’t have to have curtains or drapes which are great for attracting and holding particulates. If you do need to have window coverings, I would recommend blinds that are easy to wipe down on a regular basis.

Think I went overboard? When it comes to the air we breathe and the health of our kids, I don’t think anyone really can.

Needless to say, we do lots of laughing and dance more than when I didn’t understand what was happening. After all, isn’t having fun and enjoying life what being or feeling young should be about?
