Wouldn’t you love to have ‘smarter kids? I don’t mean that in a bad way because all kids are smart. My own grandkids are teaching me about texting, FB and creating videos, etc. What I’m talking about is ability to learn and retain information.
Do they have trouble with math, reading, science? The cause could be out of your control in the school setting (unless you want to become an activist). There are steps you can take at home. Ensure your family is getting the proper sleep, exercise, nutrition, as well as breathing clean air and drinking pure water.
Raising Smarter Kids
- Sleep is essential for all of us and as adults, we should strive for 7-8 hours. Children – elementary age and below – need 10 hours of sleep and teenagers need 9.
- Exercise is extremely important. Other than some elementary schools, recess isn’t part of the school day. My mom would chase us outside when I was younger. I used to think we may have been underfoot (there were seven of us). I know better now. TV and computer time need to be limited so the outside can be seen and felt by the kids – play ball, catch, chase. There are all sorts of outdoor games kids can play. Vitamin D is crucial for better health and there’s no better place to get it naturally than the sun. (Learn more about Vitamin D here.)
- Good nutrition is a must if you want smarter kids. Their and our bodies depend on it. Today’s world makes it incredibly tough for anyone. “40% of calories consumed by U.S. kids between the ages of 2-18 are devoid of nutrients and high in fat and sugar.” Time Magazine – Oct 18, 2010. We absolutely must use food supplements to feed our bodies what we need – it’s no longer an option! Up to 90% of U.S. soybeans, corn, cotton, canola, and sugar beets are now genetically engineered and routinely inserted into human and animal foods with no labels or safety testing. Approximately 80% of current grocery food items contain GMOs. According to U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics, the majority of beef, pork, poultry, dairy, and eggs come from CAFOs (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation).
- Clean air and water are two absolute necessities for better health. Check out the five posts I’ve written previously on household cleaners and how they affect health. You actually have smarter kids when you don’t use certain cleaners. For water, I do recommend a certain pitcher (not Brita or Pur) because it does remove so many of the contaminants that cause health issues.
Childhood illnesses that also affect learning are: ADHD, Allergies, Asthma and Autism – not focused, always sneezing, can’t breathe and in a private world. An excellent book to read – “Healing the New Childhood Epidemics Autism, ADHD, Asthma, Allergies” by Kenneth Bock, MD and Cameron Stauth.
